3 pet supply consumer trends in Q2 of 2022

The worldwide pet care market is estimated to reach $261 billion in 2022 and to increase at a 6% annual rate over the next five years. This presents a big opportunity for firms to address the increased demand for staples such as pet food while also developing new items for pet owners, such as interactive treat-dispensing dog toys.

We reported on the dramatic growth in pet supplies during the pandemic’s peak. More than two years later, one thing is certain: consumers adore their pets and spend accordingly.

  1. Pet adoption is now available.

According to commerce data, internet sales of live animals have recently increased by double or even triple digits in numerous countries, including the United Kingdom (80%), Japan (124%), Australia (164%), and the United States (192%). According to our research, dog houses were the clear victor, with significant sales growth in APAC, EMEA, and the Americas.

Also in APAC, online sales of dog diapers increased by more than 300% in April, demonstrating that man’s best friend accounted for a sizable portion of pet purchases.

  1. Aquatic life is flourishing.

According to commerce data, internet sales of aquarium-related products increased in April. APAC consumers were especially enthusiastic about sprucing up their animal interiors: sales of Aquarium Décor, which might include anything from plants and rocks to miniature gazebos and ornamental logs, more than doubled year on year.

Small animal habitats and cages performed well in APAC, with sales increasing across the region. Sales in Japan more than tripled. We reported a rise in internet sales of small animal supplies in 2020, at the height of the pandemic. A hamster, guinea pig, ferret, or even a chinchilla would be a good choice for 2022 customers, who are now well-adapted to life away from home but may lack the space required for larger animals.

  1. Cat supplies are increasing.

Cat items, not to be outdone, made a strong showing. APAC led the lead in cat supplies, with year over year growth in sales of cat food, cat furniture, and cat litter. Cat bed sales performed exceptionally well, more than doubling in Australia and Japan by April 2022.
